Podcast Production and Science Communications Intern
Podcast lovers unite! Winyah Rivers Alliance is searching for an intern with a background in environmental science, digital communications, and/or storytelling to create and launch a podcast for our organization. We hope that this podcast will not only increase public engagement with our work in conservation, water quality, and public health, but enable our intern to develop professional experience and technical skills working for an environmental nonprofit. This internship is best suited for someone with a research background (science and/or humanities) and a willingness to develop new skillsets through experiential learning.

Intern Responsibilities
- Research existing science communication podcasts to explore themes, narrative structures, and unique modes of storytelling that successfully engage listeners. Pitch themes for 2 long-form podcast episodes for Winyah Rivers Alliance that spark the intern’s curiosity and align with our mission.
- Create 2 long-form podcast episodes for Winyah Rivers Alliance. These episodes could feature members of our staff, interviews with community members, or deep dives into important issues in conservation, water quality, and public health along our NC and SC rivers. Our intern will be asked to investigate how to publish these podcasts on Spotify, Apple Music, and our website.
- Design compelling infographics and social media posts to accompany and promote the podcasts on our social media platforms.
- Check-in call with staff mentor (Avalon and/or Debra) once a week. This meeting time can be decided amongst the three of us to fit everyone’s schedules.
- Virtually attend weekly staff calls on Monday mornings from 11-12:30 PM. There is flexibility in attendance to these as the student may have class during this period.
Project Deliverables
- 2 long-form podcast episodes that are ready for promotion on all our social media platforms.
- 2 presentations/podcast pitches to staff mentors during a weekly meeting. This pitch will include the desired topic, sources used to produce high quality research, and the intended narrative structure or strategy.
- Polished infographics to support podcast promotion (i.e. thumbnail for the podcast episode, social media posts to accompany the launch of the podcast episodes).

The Molchanov Scholars Program is an endowed internship program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Institute for the Environment. The program is a partnership between the UNC Institute for the Environment and environmentally-focused small businesses, non-profit organizations and government institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Each summer undergraduate students are matched with an environmental internship where they gain hands-on, professional training. Each Molchanov Scholar receives a $5,000 stipend to support their summer experience.
1789 Hub is a community for all UNC students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship. It is free to join and membership gives you access to resources including mentorship, internships, funding, and events. In addition to our job and internship board, we also offer summer internship funding through the Carolina Innovators Connect program. This funding is meant to help support students who receive unpaid summer internships.

Kay Blada Recycling is a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit, founded in 2015 and dedicated to alleviating poverty and cleaning up plastic waste in Haiti, while providing environmental education to the children of the community.
NCPIRG Students is a student organization that works with UNC students to protect the environment, and promote civic engagement. This Fall our priority campaign is our New Voters Project, where we will be working with the student government and other student groups this fall to make sure no one misses Election Day. We have virtual volunteer and internship opportunities doing outreach, organizing events, and spreading the world through media and social media.
